SPARROWS AND BUTTERFLIES.

Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Mosque is what occupying every inch of column space in print media, every frame of visual in TVs and of course there is no conversation, which does not refer to the issue.

Recently I read an article about how sparrows and butterflies are going out of sight in Bangalore. Every one agrees that pollution level and rapid development of the city are the major reason. But what is astonishing is, I have been reading this type of article since pretty long. When I came to Bangalore about 25 years back, I was fortunate to sight sparrows and butterflies and at the same time read these types of articles worrying about their extinction.

However, I keep sighting the sparrows, butterflies even today and that too of many species. The numbers of these creatures might have been on the decline on the urban side. Still if one has ear and eye to listen to the chirping and to look at these beautiful creatures, they can be sighted even at the busy signal junction near Windsor Manor Hotel!

It is only our attitude towards life has made us not to observe these things. In fact all the technological development (mobiles, Computers, etc) in the last two decades should have made our life to be proceeding at a leisurely pace. Most of these innovations are made to reduce the time and effort to a larger extent. Alas! To lead so-called comfortable life, the effort required is manifold and there is a severe constraint on the time available also.

Since about two decades, the Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Mosque issue has played out with different intensity, inconveniencing the life of Indians. The extinction of sparrows is being declared now and then. Similarly majority of the people are searching for the Happiness perceived to be in abundance decades ago.

Just a shift in the attitude towards our life will make us to be Happy, even while stuck in the traffic jam near Windsor Manor Bridge! And when ban on bulk SMS jeopardises our financial transactions.

After all, H A P P Y means Having Awareness of Present Position and yet capable of saying Yahoo… to life!. Then, not only sparrows and butterflies but also grand rendezvous of colours can be seen at every dawn and dusk.

Note : To be capable of saying Yahoo..

Some thoughts and pictures of eclipse.

As you all know, a spectacular solar eclipse happened on 15th january 2010.

The amount of superstition surrounding the eclipse is amazing even in this era of information. It is the basic human nature of clinging to negative aspects make eclipses a fearful day.

I enjoyed the sight of eclipse on my terrace without any harm. I also enjoyed eating food during eclipse as any other day. (I have been eating during eclipses since more than 25 years and all my gastronomical system being fine over the years.)

People keep blades of grass in their houses to ward off the evil effects of the eclipse. But if we think on a broader scale, if the dead blade of grass can ward off evil around the space it has been placed, will not the grass that is growing out all over the earth protects the entire earth from evil effects of eclipse?

When I was wacthing eclipse through unexposed x-ray film , I got a phone call and it lead to manifold increase in our excitement. The phone call was about viewing the eclipse using pin hole camera. Then I decided to try that. But I could not lay my hand on any empty box and so converted a brown envelop of x-ray film into a pin hole camera and using a mirror projected the image on the wall. That was a great experience for me and my daughter. The excitment did not stop at it. When we looked at the shadow formed by the trees lined along side the road, there were thousands of image of eclipsed sun. The minute gaps between the leaves were acting as the pin hole camera! Thanks to the call made by Shri.Prakash Kulkarni, my daughter's maths teacher.

CAPTURE THE HOLIDAY FUN

( The following article was written for a school news letter issued just before the summer holiday break. Though it is written for students, by extension this can be used to capture the moments of our life. And we will have a ready reckoner for cherishing any moment at any point of time!)

Hello children! Hope you are all enjoying the summer holidays. Many of you might have planned out number of activities. The options are limitless.
Visiting your grandparents’ place, attending summer camps like swimming, cricket, dance, painting, making puppet dolls and many other such interesting things. Going on hiking, visiting places of tourist attraction and even just whiling away the time in reading your favourite story books, watching TV programmes, playing with your friends, and the list goes on.

No matter what you do during summer holidays, a day comes when you flip the page on your calendar and you see ‘June’!
But I am sure that all of you are eager to come back to school and catch up with the old friends.

You share your experiences of holidays with your friends, and suddenly you get a feeling that you could have done many more things in the holidays! Does it not happen after every summer holidays?

So if you want to avoid this and enjoy the holidays like never before, get ready to capture the fun!
By now you have fair idea of what you like to do. Your parents might have drawn up a plan. Using that as a reference, you draw your own timetable for the next 6 weeks. The following table is a model. However you can design the timetable in your own way.

Week No. Activity planned for the Week. Activity done. Experiences. Remarks

Week 1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 2
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 3
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 4
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 6
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For each week, write out all the things that you have planned. Then under the column ‘Activity done’ write the things that you accomplished during that week. Under ‘Experiences’ column, write how you felt when you were involved in your planned activities.
It may so happen that you may not complete the planned things. And some time you may have to change your plan. These changes will bring lots of mood changes! Record them in ‘Remarks’ column.

At the end of six weeks, you will have wealth of information about yourself and your environment.

Now let us see how to use this information. You can enliven and cherish the beautiful moments spent during holidays any time you refer your recordings. It will also help in your studies for the whole academic year! Whenever you are asked to write an essay, poem, story or do painting, you can refer to your book that has captured the holiday fun and can quickly come out with the required write up. Even you can see your name printed in this school magazine by writing your experiences!

So what are you waiting for? Get a notebook and start capturing every moment.

Wishing you all a very happy and fun filled holidays.

RAILWAY CROSSING.

Bangalore is growing so vast and so fast, it is devouring all that comes in its way. Just to mention a thing among many is magnificent Hudson circle, once giving a majestic look. It has turned out be a traffic island. However, there are still some relics from the past that evoke nostalgia.
One such thing is Railway crossings, which are on the verge of extinct in this traffic-manic city. One day, I was traveling with my three year old daughter in a bus. As we just passed through a railway crossing on the way, my daughter shot her usual inquisitive question “how rail and other vehicles cross over without accident?” Because she had seen the Train always moving either above or below the road, i.e., the overbridge or the underbridge. I started explaining about the gate to stop the traffic, which didn’t convince her. She kept on pestering with “how is it possible?” as she could not visualise that.

Then I promised her to take to one such crossing on reaching Bangalore. Even I was vaguely remembering where these railway crossings are? So, I could not fulfill my promise even after few weeks passed after the incident. Meanwhile, I enrolled for an evening course being conducted at Hutchins road. Ergo! There is a railway crossing near ITC factory on the way. I was very happy and decided then and there to bring my daughter to that place.

So the following Sunday evening we were there. It was quarter past six. I showed my daughter how the tracks were laid over the road and the gate on either side of the tracks. Then I approached the person manning the gate. I was eager to know when the train is likely to pass that way. The person told me to wait for 5 minutes. We waited there watching the traffic. The telephone started ringing. The person talked something, and headed towards the lever for signaling. Then he started closing the gate. The bell was ringing cautioning the people to stop. The traffic, which was flowing smoothly, appeared to become restive. There was maddening rush to get past the gate before it closed. Even after the closure of gate many people driving two-wheeler were bending their vehicles and crossing over, as if they were going for a war. It was looking like a circus.

Here I could spot two kinds of people. The first ones, who are regular users of the road. These people were performing the trapeze art of bending their vehicles almost touching the ground, with great ease. The second kind is first timers. These people first hesitate, look nervously both side of the track, and then watch the first kind of people maneuvering easily. Then they also decide to cross over. Now there is a sense of urgency as they have wasted some precious moments. They start to negotiate the bar, wriggle this way and that way. Some of them get hit also. A person broke his rear view mirror in the process.

Suddenly there was a loud whistle of engine. Now the entire process seemed to be happening in a fast forward mode. Total chaos! Other vehicles also now started moving nearer to the gate. There were pedestrians also jostling in the melee. Whistle of the engine became shrill and the train was visible now. Everything came to grinding halt. There was only the sound “dhag, dhag, dhag dhag” with creaking of wheels. The sound started fading away. The gate slowly started going up. Everybody wanted to get out of the jam they have created. For 10 minutes there was a long line of vehicles on both sides of the railway track. After that the calmness of Sunday returned to place.

My daughter was very pleased to witness all this and also got convinced about the train and bus crossing each others path!
