“I don’t like meditation!”
That’s what a participant exclaimed during a recent mindful
meditation session. It was the second time I had heard such a reaction in my
four years of facilitating meditation sessions for stress management.
To be honest, that used to be my response too, over two
decades ago!
The first time a participant said this, I paused, unsure how
to respond. This time, I smiled and said, "Thank you for sharing your
perspective. Let’s see if it changes in the next 45 minutes."
As the session unfolded, participants experienced what it
means to simply be in meditation—without trying, striving, or forcing.
They discovered how often we miss the beauty of presence when we approach
meditation through doingness.
At the end of the session, the same participant came up and
said, "This is the first time I have felt such restfulness and calm, even
though I have been trying different methods for the past six months!"
So, friends, don’t "do" meditation, be in
meditation.
