Lesson on web design

I am not an expert web designer, but after seeing two web designs in my backyard, I couldn’t help but draw some parallels to the digital world.

Image 1 :

A delicate, artistic spider web, shining in the light. It’s beautiful, no doubt. But… it was not exactly catching any bugs.

Form over function? Maybe.

Image 2:

A no-nonsense, sprawling web between the barbed wires. It was not winning any beauty awards, but it sure was effective. Bugs didn’t stand a chance. Function over form? Absolutely.

This got me thinking: isn’t this the same debate we have with websites?

Should we focus on making them look stunning or ensuring they are practical and get the job done?

Turns out, like the spiders, the best design is a balance.

A web – whether spun by nature or coded online – needs to catch something. Bugs, customers, leads, conversions. You can have the flashiest site in the world, but if it doesn’t work, what’s the point?

And finally, remember:

Whether it’s the web in your backyard or the one on the internet, both should be able to catch bugs and customers! 😉
