The Profound Practice of Stillness: A Journey with Zhan Zhuang
In today's post, Venu Gopal Nair (on LinkedIn)touched
upon the transformative power of stillness, referencing our previous discussion.
Reflecting on my decade-long journey practicing Zhan Zhuang,
I find resonance with concepts found in Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of
Now" and the practice of Vipassana meditation.
Standing like a tree might seem simple, but its impact rivals
that of physically demanding exercises. Remarkably, this practice has exhibited
a profound healing effect. I've witnessed ailments like fever, stomach issues,
and bodily aches dissipate after just a half-hour session. My reliance on
medication over the past five years is almost nil, a testament to the
practice's efficacy.
Recently, I decided to immerse myself entirely in the
experience of being akin to a tree. Observing trees, one notices their
stillness amidst external changes—weather shifts, insects or birds interacting
with them, yet they remain unwaveringly rooted.
Surprisingly, emulating this stillness led me to a profound
realization. During a midnight bus breakdown, 200 km away from Bangalore, a
journey that took four additional hours due to a replacement bus, I found
myself free from the incessant chatter of the mind. This happened yesterday
night!
At that moment, the practice granted me the ability to
transcend thoughts of blame or complaint. Like the steadfast tree, I stood in
adversity, embracing the situation with a very deep calm.
The journey of stillness through Zhan Zhuang has not only
impacted my physical well-being but has also gifted me a newfound mental
resilience—an invaluable asset in navigating life's unforeseen challenges.
Have you ever experienced a moment of profound stillness
amidst chaos?
