In the serene mountains of Zenland, Suswasa, a seeker yearning for wisdom, stood at the crossroads of two conflicting philosophies. He had heard of a revered Zen guru who preached the virtues of an empty cup, and another tale that spoke of the necessity of a full one. Eager to resolve this inner conflict, Suswasa embarked on a journey to seek clarity.
Upon reaching the guru's abode, Suswasa posed his questions,
"Great sage, I've heard of the wisdom in keeping the cup empty, ready to
receive. Yet, another story speaks of the importance of a full cup to share
life's elixir. How do I reconcile these two teachings?"
The guru, with a serene gaze, responded, "In the dance
of life, my dear Suswasa, there are moments to empty the cup and moments to
fill it. Look at the cups—they are kept empty and clean most of the time,
filled only to serve. Similarly, the mind should be in a state of meditation,
ready to receive and give."
Suswasa, absorbing the wisdom, found solace in the guru's
words. He realized that, like the cups awaiting their purpose, the mind too
should be in a perpetual state of meditation—empty and clean, yet ready to be
filled when the time to serve arrives.
