Here’s a common man’s understanding of the conference on shaping the future of jobs and mobility held on 30th June 2023 at Taj West End, Bengaluru.
Indian economy is poised to become $30 trillion from the current $3.75 trillion in the next 25 years.
So there won’t be any dearth of jobs, but the challenge of matching the demand and supply of jobs with the right skilled people!
Two kinds of migration are possible here;
1. Moving people to the workplace (migration)
2. Moving work to the people’s place. (reverse migration)
This requires the massive economic activity of increasing the productivity of enterprises and the meaningful wages for the employees.
So we can see a big transition happening in the job market, from informal sector to formal sector, rural to urban and from fixed wages to meaningful wages.
It is estimated that only 20% of the jobs will be fulltime and 80% becoming flexi work.
This opens up the possibility for people who are given jobs to also become consumers.
The logistics involved in movement of people and work creates more jobs and expand economic activity.
Here the challenge is Skilling to be mapped in tune with the migration and also skilling towards more and more wages!
This whole thing is bringing the synergy between work, worker, and workplaces. The nature of job, workplaces are going to be entirely different than what it is today. And digitalisation pervades everything.
The hybrid work, migration across geography and time zones brings forth both the challenge and opportunity in implementing DE&I , and ESG.
This requires a massive partnership among Industry, academia and the Government.
It is heartening to know the CII is facilitating this and others are responding encouragingly.
Though presently technology is seen as replacing jobs, ultimately tech and ESG initiatives create a lot of jobs.
This obviously calls for continuous learning.
There was a passing mention of Psychometric assessments. This requires more discussion on how to leverage this tool in matching people, work and skills.
Then there was a more emphasis on imparting super skills which are essential for the new age jobs.
Finally my musings;
In a rush to move towards $30 trillion economy, everyone seems to be going in a fast forward mode, including the CII conference. I asked the question to panel - we are in a terrific rush and don’t we think there is a need for the ‘Pause’?
The conference moved on to the next session without pause! 😊
There is a buzz everywhere about - learning, unlearning, and relearning.
However, to reflect, reassess and recalibrate, Pauses are necessary and these pauses are a great way to de-stress and rejuvenate on the go!
Digitalization is becoming a top priority but Humanisation is also equally important.
Self Awareness takes care of necessary pause and humanization!
PS – Thanks and gratitude to Sujatha Suresh Talupuru for creating the opportunity for me to attend this amazing conference.
