The caption itself is a misnomer. And it is this urge ‘to do’ meditation leaves us more jittery, angry and frustrated after the daily ritual of meditation.
So, the first thing to be realised is – we need to be in meditative mode, here, now and always. To be in meditation means to know and experience our being and nothing else. So, really there is nothing to do to experience our being. Only we need to ‘do’ or ‘not do’ something without expectation. That is the key for meditation.
In this information age, we have collected lot of info regarding meditation. We even fish out the facts about a Guru and his methods before deciding to seek the help -through cyber space and acquaintances. With this our mind gets prejudiced.
For many people the reason ‘to do’ meditation is to find peace, improve relationships, improve concentration then aspire for success in whatever they are doing. When we sit and close eyes ‘to do’ meditation with all these kind of expectations, there is an explosion of information in the mind, thoughts whirl around, and heart beat races up. This unsettles us. By that time the daily quota allotted for meditation gets over. Then we hurry up to do our routine chores. This cycle repeats on and on with the result of increased anxiety, angry, complexes and helplessness.
So what to do?
There is a distinct connectivity between our thoughts, words, action and the breath. Once we become aware of this, meditation happens. You can experiment the following;
When you sit for meditation next time do not worry about the method you have adopted. For few days just keep observing your thoughts, the self-talk that’s going on, heart beat, your sitting posture and the breath. Now steady any one of the above. You are free to choose any one and be comfortable with your choice.
Suppose if you choose breath, keep observing its pattern and slowly come to a rhythm. Now shift your awareness to heartbeat, self-talk or thoughts. Look what’s happened?
This way you experiment with different combination and find out the most comforting one.
Now, you are on a meditation expedition. But the most intriguing question remained unresolved. That is – When to meditate? and how much time to devote?
Again try out different time of the day/night and as long as you can give time for yourself, so that the observing game is in comfort zone.
After a few days of experimentation, you will have the knowledge of your comfortable period and quantum of time. Armed with this knowledge, continue the experiment for few more days. Of course do not have any expectations or search for results out of this experiment.
Then you will definitely experience your own being and you are on auto pilot to lead your life. Also you will be in meditative mode forever.
